Diabetes rates are surging rapidly in Asia. Sun Life’s latest report reveals that over 90 million people in Southeast Asia currently have diabetes. New research forecasts that by 2045, the number of adults with diabetes in the region will hit 152 million, presenting a substantial public health issue.
According to Sun Life’s findings, 33% of diabetics face a severe financial burden, and 82% struggle to afford proper care. Financial concerns about diabetes are even more common than health – related ones. Moreover, 65% of diabetics report negative impacts on their mental health. The study also pointed out lifestyle challenges, such as 31% of respondents, especially the young, exercising less in recent years. Among the less active, 46% blamed a lack of access to safe and quality exercise spaces.
There are also widespread misconceptions about diabetes. 29% think it only affects overweight people, 57% attribute it only to excessive sugar intake, and 50% believe treatment always involves insulin. A lack of awareness before diagnosis is prevalent, with 29% of diabetics having limited knowledge. While 92% think remission is possible, many don’t believe it can happen within a year. Sun Life’s study surveyed 3,647 individuals in multiple Asian regions, including 600 with type 2 diabetes, to understand diabetes – related awareness.
