AIA Group Limited has made a significant leadership appointment, naming Fisher Zhang as the new regional chief executive. Zhang will be responsible for overseeing operations in three key Asian markets: China, South Korea, and Vietnam. This appointment not only signals a new phase in AIA’s regional strategy but also highlights Zhang’s standing within the organization.
In addition to his regional responsibilities, Zhang will also have a seat on the AIA Group Executive Committee and will report directly to Lee Yuan Siong, the group’s chief executive and president. However, it’s important to note that his appointment is contingent upon regulatory approvals. Zhang’s long and illustrious tenure with AIA, which began in 2000 when he joined AIA China, has been marked by numerous achievements. Notably, in 2017, he ascended to the role of CEO of AIA China.
Under his leadership, AIA achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first foreign company to establish a wholly-owned life insurance subsidiary in China. Moreover, AIA China has experienced significant expansion, opening new branches in multiple geographies such as Tianjin, Hebei, Sichuan, Hubeu, and Henan. The company has also secured regulatory approvals to set up branches in Anhui, Shandong, and Chongqing, further solidifying its footprint in the Chinese market and laying a strong foundation for Zhang’s new regional role.
