Chinese authorities have dismantled more than 300 criminal gangs involved in insurance fraud as part of an extensive seven-month operation, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced on January 3, 2025.
The campaign, launched in April 2024, has led to over 40 major operations and investigations into more than 1,400 fraudulent cases. The total value of the fraud cases under investigation amounts to approximately $209 million (CNY 1.5 billion).
Authorities have focused on various types of fraud, including auto insurance, personal injury claims, employer liability, and newer insurance products that have been a source of widespread public and industry complaints.
Hua Liebing, Director of the MPS’s Economic Crime Investigation Bureau, emphasized that the crackdown was in direct response to growing concerns over fraudulent activities within the insurance sector.
The operation was carried out in close coordination with financial regulators. The National Financial Regulatory Administration contributed over 12,000 investigative leads to support law enforcement efforts in tackling the issue.
