As of December 31, 2024, Taiwan’s earthquake insurance system held a total liability of NT$6.1 trillion ($189.1 billion), according to data from the Taiwan Residential Earthquake Insurance Fund.
The system, which covers residential properties, had 3.6 million active policies by the end of last year, representing 38.89% of Taiwan’s 9.4 million households. Specifically, the capital city, Taipei, accounted for 401,604 of these policies, which made up 11.02% of the total.
The earthquake insurance program is designed to help homeowners recover from the financial impact of natural disasters. The current liability reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to provide coverage in a region vulnerable to seismic activity.
