Australia Sees Surge in Claims as Cyclone Recovery Lags

by Celia

Australia is experiencing a significant increase in insurance claims following the impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, with more than 44,000 claims filed as of March 13, according to the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA).

While initial concerns about widespread severe wind damage did not materialize, a majority of claims have been linked to storm-driven water damage and food spoilage caused by power outages.

In response to the surge in claims, insurers have deployed additional claims consultants and brought in interstate builders to speed up the recovery process. However, the ICA has issued a warning to residents about “disaster chasers”—unlicensed individuals offering services such as tree and debris removal. These operators often ask for cash upfront but fail to complete or properly execute the work.

Homeowners are strongly advised to consult with their insurers before agreeing to any services, as only approved work will be covered.

Andrew Hall, CEO of the ICA, acknowledged that although the damage from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred was less severe than initially feared, many communities are still facing a prolonged recovery process.
