The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has confirmed that insurance claims from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred and the North Queensland floods have surpassed A$1.2 billion, with over 95,000 claims filed.
According to the ICA’s latest data, the damages from Cyclone Alfred alone have led to nearly A$1 billion in insurance losses, with insurers receiving approximately 95,000 claims. As of now, around 30% of these claims have been resolved, primarily related to food spoilage and temporary accommodation needs.
Additionally, the North Queensland floods have resulted in more than 10,000 claims, totaling A$233 million. The majority of these claims concern food spoilage and water ingress due to wind-driven rain, overflowing gutters, and flooding.
ICA CEO Andrew Hall commented that the year 2025 has already witnessed significant weather events, particularly in Queensland. Although only a small number of claims have been filed for the recent floods in western Queensland, insurers are actively supporting affected customers and preparing to deploy further resources as soon as access is restored.
The total insurance losses from these events highlight the ongoing vulnerability of Queensland to extreme weather, with the full impact still unfolding.
