Ping An Property & Casualty Insurance Company of China (Ping An P&C) has launched a global version of its disaster risk intelligence platform, EagleX, in response to growing climate-related exposures facing insurers and governments worldwide.
EagleX combines artificial intelligence, satellite imaging, and big data analytics to support risk assessment, early warning, and post-disaster claims processing. The platform’s expansion reflects Ping An Insurance Group’s broader strategy to integrate technology and insurance services for enhanced climate resilience.
AI-Driven Risk Management at Scale
Originally developed for the Chinese market in 2017, EagleX now delivers cross-border risk intelligence capabilities. It ingests over 2 trillion data points—including topographical, meteorological, and historical insurance data—to forecast and monitor natural hazards such as typhoons, floods, earthquakes, and extreme rainfall.
The international version offers three core features:
- Disaster risk maps
- Real-time alerts
- Satellite-assisted loss verification
The system aids insurers in underwriting and pricing while enabling governments and corporations to implement proactive risk mitigation. Alerts are distributed via mobile apps, SMS, and voice calls, reaching over 67 million users in 2023.
In 2024 alone, EagleX issued 10.5 billion alerts and flagged thousands of high-risk scenarios. In one case, the platform detected terrain instability during a hydropower project in Pakistan, prompting early intervention and reportedly averting major financial losses.
Rapid Response in Beijing Storm
The platform’s real-time capabilities were recently demonstrated during a May 13 hailstorm in Beijing. EagleX detected the storm early and issued alerts to more than 3 million users and 20,000 businesses.
Ping An P&C activated an emergency response across regions, deploying over 2,000 personnel and 43 claims specialists. As of May 19, more than 31,000 claims were filed, 10,400 of which had been settled with payouts totaling approximately RMB62 million.
For minor claims under RMB10,000, Ping An waived in-person inspections, allowing users to submit photo evidence for faster processing.
Addressing Global Insurance Gaps
EagleX’s expansion comes as the insurance industry grapples with mounting climate risks and significant protection gaps. According to a recent report by WTW, more than 80% of weather-related economic losses in South Asia remain uninsured.
The 2024 South Asian monsoon season caused widespread damage in India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, affecting agriculture, infrastructure, and energy systems.
Zurich Insurance’s global analysis estimates the natural catastrophe protection gap at US$180 billion—a 65% increase over the past five years. The gap highlights the urgent need for scalable risk intelligence solutions like EagleX.
Looking Ahead
As climate-related disasters grow more frequent and severe, EagleX positions Ping An at the forefront of technology-led risk management. Its expanded capabilities aim to improve disaster preparedness, enhance response coordination, and reduce uninsured losses globally.
