A state Democratic initiative aimed at preventing life insurance companies from discriminating against applicants with felony convictions passed the Illinois Senate insurance committee on Tuesday.
The proposed law would prohibit insurers from denying or limiting life insurance coverage based on past felony convictions.
State Senator Adriane Johnson (D-Waukegan) emphasized the need to remove “invisible handcuffs” that restrict reformed individuals from securing coverage to support their families.
The bill cleared the committee on a partisan 8-4 vote and is scheduled to move to the Senate floor for further debate before the legislative session ends this week.
