A Vallejo woman has been arrested in Madera County for allegedly staging a carjacking with her boyfriend as part of an insurance fraud scheme, authorities announced Wednesday.

Martha Gutierrez DeRomero, 57, was booked into Madera County Jail on charges of felony insurance fraud, conspiracy, and filing a false police report, according to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.

DeRomero reported the alleged carjacking on May 23, claiming two masked men stole her Chevrolet van — which she said contained around $60,000 in swap meet merchandise — at knifepoint while she was pulled over at Avenue 21 and Road 26. Investigators later uncovered inconsistencies in her account, leading to suspicions of a staged event.
