The American InsurTech Council is calling on Congress to allow states to retain authority over the regulation of artificial intelligence in the insurance and annuities sectors.
Scott Harrison, a principal with the council, urged lawmakers to exempt insurance-related AI applications from any federal legislation that might restrict state oversight. He warned that curbing state regulators’ power could undermine consumer protections at a time when AI is reshaping how insurance is developed, priced, marketed, underwritten, and delivered.
“Putting state insurance AI regulators on a leash now could jeopardize consumer protections,” Harrison stated.
