Bermuda College has teamed up with the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS) to offer a series of courses aimed at raising awareness of the island’s insurance sector among students.
A spokesperson said the four “Intro-to-Insurance” seminars will be free for Bermuda College students. Industry partners can also send interns at a discounted rate. The sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on June 18, 19, 25, and 26, held on the Bermuda College campus.
L’Tanya Roberts, Dean of Business, Hospitality, and Technology at Bermuda College, explained that the course was previously offered by the Bermuda Insurance Institute. The Bermuda College Insurance Advisory Committee recommended bringing it back. She added, “Victoria Cunningham, one of our insurance adjunct faculty and now BFIS Executive Director, is also on our Insurance Advisory Committee. It was natural to partner with BFIS for this project.”
Victoria Cunningham said the seminars will cover insurance fundamentals. Topics include the history of Bermuda’s market, insurance-linked securities (ILS), captives, reinsurance, claims, underwriting, and broking. Industry professionals will lead the sessions, sharing real-world examples and discussing current market challenges.
Cunningham added, “My goal is to offer this seminar three times a year: summer for students, then again in October and February for entry-level professionals, related fields like accounting and law, and those looking to switch careers.”
She described reviving the Intro-to-Insurance seminar as a passion project. “Having helped design and teach the original sessions, I understand the impact a solid introduction to this industry can have. Partnering with Bermuda College, BFIS is proud to equip Bermudian students and interns with the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in the reinsurance sector.”
